Overview

Rose of Lima House is a permanent housing program for 50 chronically homeless women, many of whom suffer from chronic and acute mental illness, addiction issues, and/or trauma. Rose House is located at Bakhita Gardens, a building that also houses Noel House Programs, which provides shelter and related services for homeless women in several locations. Bakhita Gardens serves women of all ages (over 18 years) and ethnic backgrounds.

 

At Rose of Lima, the on –call Women’s Advocate is responsible for providing some direct services to the women, along with administrative and janitorial duties, cooking, assisting with the front desk and lobby of Bakhita Gardens, cooking and fostering a team environment among shelter staff and volunteers.  

 

The pay range for this position is $15.60-$16.54/hour.

Responsibilities

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Direct service to previously homeless women
  1. Provide crisis intervention and advocacy to women in a harm reduction program
  2. Coordinate with in-house social service team, make referrals for service, and follow-up as needed
  3. Model interpersonal and living skills for clients
  4. Explain and enforce building and program rules
  5. Maintain and safe and comfortable environment
  6. Participate with residents in community meal preparation and cleanup
  7. Work as a team with other colleagues on shift and be able to work independently without direct supervision
  8. Review and record in log book to ensure program consistency
  9. Conduct security checks throughout building to ensure that no unauthorized individuals are in the building and to monitor for unsafe conditions or situations
  10. Walk program floors hourly, monitoring the safety of the building
  1. Monitor security cameras and lobby, enforcing building and program rules.

 

  1. Provide janitorial support including but not limited to:
    1. Removal of residential and commercial trash and recycling
    2. Take garbage/recycling totes to basement for proper disposal
    3. Clean common area floors and bathrooms as appropriate
    4. Assist tenants with the cleanliness of their apartments, including assistance with organization and cleaning following bug or mite infestation
    5. Clean spills of potentially infections materials in common areas
    6.  
  2. Administrative responsibilities including but not limited to:
    1. Data entry
    2. Pack and prepare kits for distribution to all tenants
    3. Maintain organization of common areas
    4. Assist with the concierge desk, greeting tenants and visitors, assuring they sign in properly, and maintain the safety of the first floor4.   Coordinate with Noel House Staff and Program Volunteers
    5. Coordinate closely with Noel House Advocates and other staff to ensure security of building and to build cooperative relationship between the two programs co-located in Bakhita Gardens.

    1. Work collaboratively with volunteers and assist them to resolve difficult situations with residents.

    1. Attend staff meetings, workshops, retreats, and in-service classes as provided.
    2. Maintain accurate record of hours worked and turn in timesheets on schedule.
    3. Contribute to and support a positive, team-oriented work environment; participate with other staff members in group decision-making process.
    4. Maintain cleanliness and order at advocate station.
    5. Inform supervisors of facilities and client-related issues.  
    6. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

JOB CONDITIONS

This position requires the employee to work in an environment where there may be exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and other potentially infectious material. Other exposures could include cleaning supplies, chemicals involved in pest control, paint and other materials used in building maintenance. Working conditions may include interruptions and interactions with mentally ill, chemically dependent and angry persons.

 

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL ACUITY DEMANDS:

  1. Able to hear telephone rings, phone conversation, doorbells, emergency alarms and face-to-face conversation.
  2. Able to speak clearly in person and on the telephone.
  3. Able to hand write legibly.
  4. Vision that enables person to read normal size print and handwritten notes; and distance and peripheral vision than enables person to monitor large spaces and identify concerns that require staff response.
  5. Mobility/dexterity of hands/arms to enable keying into locked areas as well as using a computer and other office equipment.
  6. Able to sit for sustained periods of time.
  7. Able to walk the entire building and ascend and descend stairs quickly to move from one floor to another in order to respond to emergency situations.
  8. Ability to lift, move and/or carry up to 15-20 pounds.
  9. Able to make independent decisions and apply sound judgment in performing job duties.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  1. Social service experience (minimum of six months).
  2. Understanding the issues that homeless women face, such as: trauma, alcohol and drug abuse, mental illness and domestic violence.
  3. Demonstrate problem-solving/issue assessment skills, and/or crisis intervention or conflict mediation skills.
  4. Basic computer skills with ability to maintain up to date and meticulous records.
  5. Excellent oral and written communications
  6. Must have a reliable phone or voice mail service.
  7. Applicant must successfully pass required background checks prior to an offer of employment.
  8. Ability to work independently in addition to working as a member of a team.
  9. Demonstrates the necessary attitudes, knowledge and skills to deliver culturally competent services and work effectively in multi-cultural situations.
  10. Support and uphold the mission, beliefs and values of Catholic Community Services and Catholic Housing Services.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. College level classes toward degree in Social Service.

Previous work experience in a women-focused social service program.
