Overview

The Friends Shelter Shelters 48 homeless men nightly, the shelter hours of operations are from 10PM till 6AM, the shift runs from 9:30PM until 6:30AM.

 

Lead Staff are in charge of running the shelter in a smooth manner, leading the Floor Monitor, check in men into shelter, record data, monitor shelter dorm areas for trouble spots, preform required janitorial duties, and use appropriate verbal de-escalation tools as needed with guest and work with the Operations Supervisor and Program Director in order to generate a safe work and shelter environment.

This is a full time, benefited position with 30 hours as Lead Staff and 10 hours as Floor Monitor.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

Lead Staff Responsibilities :

  1. Monitor the shelter throughout shift (including restrooms) responding to any crisis situations. Be the lead staff member on site, and provide guidance and leadership in response to crises.
  2. Assign duties to other staff on shift. Support and monitor staff in their work.
  3. Provide oversight of procedures and shelter policies by establishing and maintaining procedures (e.g. greeting and sign-in of clients, explanation of shelter rules, collecting and securing program supplies).
  4. Facilitate daily staff briefings at the beginning of the shift.
  5. Monitor client behavior and implement consequences for violating the shelter guidelines.
  6. Assist the Operations Supervisor and Program Director with ensuring all shifts are covered.
  7. Communicate with the <Operations Supervisor> and the Program Director to keep them updated on any matters both routine and unusual.
  1. Refer Shelter Residents to appropriate social services agencies for assistance. Record Shelter Residents registrations and other statistical information.
  2. Attend and participate in monthly staff meetings, and in trainings required by CCS/CHS for all employees.
  3. Perform required janitorial duties on each assigned shift.
  4. Complete shift checklist as duties are performed.
  5. Perform other tasks as needed or assigned by the Operations Supervisor and Program Director.

Floor Monitor Responsibilities:

  1. Monitor the shelter throughout shift (including restrooms) responding to any crisis situations.
  2. Oversee the dispensing of snacks, when available and keep coffee made throughout the night. Clean the coffee maker and clean the snack area after the shelter closes before the end of shift.
  3. Refer Shelter Residents to appropriate social services agencies for assistance. Record Shelter Residents registrations and other statistical information.
  4. Attend and participate in monthly staff meetings, and in trainings required by CCS/CHS for all employees.
  5. Perform required janitorial duties on each assigned shift.
  6. Complete shift checklist as duties are performed.
  7. Perform other tasks as assigned by Shift Supervisor.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  1. Two years of direct service with homeless people or a similar population.
  2. Work history that demonstrates: Reliability and dependability; Ability to interact and communicate well with others; Ability to provide leadership to staff and volunteers.
  3. Experience in crisis intervention.
  4. Understanding of the disease of alcoholism and other substance abuse issues, and mental health disorders.
  5. Support and uphold the mission, beliefs and values of Catholic Community Services and Catholic Housing Services.
  6. Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  7. Demonstrate the necessary attitudes, knowledge and skills to deliver culturally competent services and work effectively in multicultural situations.
  8. Criminal history background checks are required prior to employment.
