Overview

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The Josephinum is an historic high-rise building in downtown Seattle providing 221 units of housing for a diverse population of low-income individuals. Some units are set-asides for formerly homeless individuals.

A Catholic parish, Christ Our Hope, is the primary commercial tenant of the building and shares common space with residential tenants.          Women’s Wellness Center, a hygiene program for homeless women, and Share Wheel, a non-profit self-managed shelter provider, also are located in the building. The building is the largest single property in the portfolio of Catholic Housing Services of Western Washington, and is closely aligned with the mission of the Catholic Church.

 

Position Description:      

This position assists residents with eliminating insect infestations by providing technical and practical support. The advocate works closely with the residents, identifying housekeeping challenges and resources, developing skills and strategies to facilitate lease compliance. This position reports to the Clinical Supervisor and works closely with the Resident Services Case Manager and the Facilities team to implement and maintain a program of systemic assessment of and response to insect infestations in the building.

Responsibilities

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Schedule pest control professionals for required routine inspections and treatments
  • Prepare and distribute the 48 hour notices for all routine inspections, re-inspections, treatment visits and canine inspections.
  • Provide information and support to residents to increase their understanding of the steps required to prepare for pest elimination and containment
  • Work closely with Services to support residents to reach their health and safety goals
  • Assist residents to prepare their units for treatment to include education on bedbug treatment: laundry, sorting and disposal of unnecessary and unsafe clutter, hoarding.
  • Steam furniture and fixtures
  • Plan and track treatment of items by freezing or use of no pest strip
  • Keep record of all pest control inspections, professional treatments, staff assistance with pest control preparation, hoarding assistance, assistance with eliminating unsanitary/unsafe conditions.
  • Maintain and distribute a list of residents with health and safety concerns to services staff for support and follow up.

General Responsibilities:  

 

  1. Observe and adhere to confidentiality rights of residents
  2. Maintain accurate records of hours worked and complete timesheet on schedule
  3. Attend all required trainings as scheduled
  4. Become familiar with landlord/tenant law and the actions that are permissible for landlords.
  5. Maintain cooperative relationships with residents/businesses in surrounding neighborhood.
  6. Contribute to the mission of Catholic Community Services and Catholic Housing Services.
  7. Contribute to and support a positive, team-oriented work environment.
  8. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

 

JOB CONDITIONS:

This position requires the employee to work in an environment where there will be exposure to household pests that may include; fleas, roaches and bedbugs. There may be exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and other potentially infectious material. Other exposures could include cleaning supplies, chemicals involved in pest control, paint and other materials used in building maintenance, building temperature fluctuations, dust, noise, and odors.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

  1. High School Diploma or GED
  2. At least one year experience serving homeless, chemically dependent, mentally ill or other disenfranchised populations
  3. Work history that demonstrates reliability and dependability.
  4. Able to communicate effectively with staff and residents.
  5. Ability to interact positively with residents and visitors during stressful situations.
  6. Experience with verbal de-escalation
  7. Ability to learn crisis intervention skills
  8. Ability to contribute to an environment which honors and supports diversity and contributes to an environment of dignity and respect.
  9. Ability to work within the mission, goals and objectives of Catholic Community Services and Catholic Housing Services.
  10. Criminal history background checks are required prior to employment
  11.  

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. 2 years college level studies in Social Services or related field.
  2. Experience with the Harm Reduction Model
  3. Experience with a Strengths-based approach
  4. Experience using Motivational Interviewing
