Overview

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

 

The SKC Shelter programs serve single adults ages 18 and older. These programs directly address the issues of homelessness in South King County by providing a safe place for homeless individuals to rest and receive a nourishing meal, as well as giving them the opportunity to stabilize and work on self-sufficiency through case management. Those who stay at the shelter are provided with case management services which focus on addressing income needs, mental health and CD issues, Veterans’ services, securing permanent affordable housing and health care for each individual.

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Site-managers are required to open the shelter program and supervise shelter clients nightly. They greet and confirm that clients are signed-in nightly, while maintaining on-site shelter data and logs. Site-managers records information, as required by program guidelines. They also respond to emergencies in an appropriate and compassionate way and notify management of potential safety concerns in a timely manner. This is a an on call position.

Responsibilities

  • Manages emergency shelter.
  1. Monitors the daily workings of the shelter and debriefs each night with Case Manager (when available).
  2. Coordinates shelter’s nightly schedule and activities.
  3. Supervises and monitors the safe operation of the shelter each night, including client, volunteer and staff safety.
  4. Responsible for clean-up of church facility.
  5. Meets with other staff on schedules, problems and solutions for shelter issues.

 

  • Opens the shelter facility and supervises shelter clients.
  1. Responsible for greeting and sign-in of clients, explanation of shelter rules, collection and storage of client belongings and program supplies.
  2. Makes sure that any client entering the shelter actually stays in the shelter.
  3. Monitors client behavior and makes decisions nightly regarding clients stays based on adherence to shelter guidelines.
  4. Responds to emergency situations in an appropriate way and notifies Case Manager and Program Manager.

 

 

  • Maintains on-site shelter data base and shelter log.
  1. Maintains data base of shelter clients and provides accurate information for billings and reports.
  2. Maintains nightly log for the shelter, recording information about client’s status and shelter activities.
  3. Works closely and in consultation with Case Manager in regard to client case status.

 

  • Works with volunteers for shelters.
  1. Coordinates with Volunteer Coordinator and other volunteers regarding the needs of the shelter.
  2. Maintains good relations with church volunteers.

 

JOB CONDITIONS:

This position requires the employee to work in an environment where there may be exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and other potentially infectious material.  Other exposures could include cleaning supplies, chemicals involved in pest control, paint and other materials used in building maintenance. Working conditions may include interruptions, working alone, and interactions with mentally ill, intoxicated or angry persons.

 

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL ACUITY REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Able to hear telephone rings, phone and face-to-face conversation, and emergency alarms.
  2. Able to speak clearly in person and on the telephone.
  3. Able to hand write legibly.
  4. Vision that enables person to read normal size print and handwritten notes; and distance and peripheral vision than enables person to monitor living spaces and identify concerns that require staff response.
  5. Able to walk the entire building and ascend and descend stairs quickly to move from one floor to another in order to respond to emergency situations.
  6. Ability to lift, move and/or carry up to 40 pounds.
  7. Able to sit for sustained periods of time.
  8. Mobility/dexterity of hands/arms to enable keying into locked areas as well as using a computer and other office equipment.
  9. Able to make independent decisions and apply sound judgment in performing job duties.
  10. Regularly able to perform duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Training or experience in a social service setting, minimum one year.
  2. Commitment to serving the poor and homeless.
  3. Commitment to developing and safekeeping a workplace which values and supports a culturally diverse work environment.
  4. Current TB test, or willing to obtain within 30 days of hire
  5. CPR/First Aid Certificates/Blood Borne Pathogens - within 30 days of hire.
  6. Commitment to CCS's Mission Statement.
  7. Ability to enforce shelter rules, including maintaining a drug and alcohol free shelter
  8. Ability to work with culturally diverse clients.
  9. Ability to work independently and with a team.

 

 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Experience working with homeless populations, specifically men.
  2. Fluency in Spanish
