  • Overview


    Noel House Programs provides shelter and related services for homeless women in several locations. Many clients have chronic and acute mental illness, addiction issues, and/or trauma. Noel House Programs serves women of all ages (over 18 years) and ethnic backgrounds. Women’s Advocates are responsible for providing direct service to the women and fostering a team environment among shelter staff and volunteers. On-call Women’s Advocates are trained to work at the following staffed service sites: Women’s Referral Center, Noel House shelter, and St. Mark’s shelter.



    1. Direct service to homeless women
    1. Provide crisis intervention and advocacy to women in a harm reduction program.
    2. Coordinate with other social service agency workers (case managers, social workers, medical professionals) to provide for clients’ immediate needs.
    3. Model interpersonal and living skills for clients.
    4. Enforce building and program rules including bar policy.
    5. Maintain and safe and comfortable shelter environment, including physical set-up and light janitorial duties, when necessary.
    6. Work as a team with other colleagues on shift and be able to work independently without direct supervision.
    1. Client intake, assessment and advocacy  
    1. Register new clients including evaluation and assessment of client needs.
    2. Review and record in log book to ensure program consistency.
    3. Maintain client records, updating information on an ongoing basis.
    4. Explain and enforce policies and procedures.
    5. Maintain accurate client count throughout shifts.
    6. Determine appropriate shelter placement for each client; based on history of abuse, psychological and physical state and language barriers, if any.
    7. Engage outside professionals (Mental Health Professionals, Medics, Police) when appropriate.
    1. Concierge duties
    1. Manage front desk and building security, including welcoming clients, visitors and donors, monitoring security cameras and lobby, enforcing building and program rules, and sanitizing client belongings.  
    2. Process mail and messages and maintain accurate client tracking records, including the bar list.
    3. Answer phones and provide information to callers about Noel House Programs, Rose of Lima House, and local resources.
    1. Supervision of volunteers
      1. Supervise volunteers on shift.
      2. Work with off-site volunteers providing advice and support as needed.
    2. Administrative and General Responsibilities
      1. Attend staff meetings, workshops, retreats, and in-service classes as provided.
      2. Maintain accurate record of hours worked and turn in timesheets on schedule.
      3. Contribute to and support a positive, team-oriented work environment; participate with other staff members in group decision-making process.
      4. Maintain cleanliness and order at front desk and lobby area.
      5. Inform supervisors of facilities and client-related issues.  
      6. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.



    1. Social service experience (minimum of six months).
    2. Experience working with or knowledge of women’s issues, homelessness, mental illness, and addictions.
    3. Knowledge and experience with crisis intervention.
    4. Ability to work within the mission, goals, and objectives of Catholic Housing Services/Catholic Community Services.
    5. Ability to commit to developing and safekeeping a workplace that values and supports a culturally diverse work environment.
    6. Must have a reliable phone or voice mail service at all times in which to be reached.
    7. Ability to contribute to a work environment that fosters respect, teamwork, and excellence.
