  • Overview

    The Lazarus Day Center provides a warm, safe, hospitable place with a community atmosphere for homeless and marginally housed men and women age 50 and older. On an average day, 350 individuals come through our doors seeking food and shelter. The center is open 365 days a year 24 hours per day. These hours/days may change as funding allows.

    As a result of their age and living conditions, the majority of our guests suffer from mental and physical disabilities. The Center opened in July 1990 to serve this special population of elderly people who are vulnerable to the weather, street predators, and illness.


    There are currently multiple positions available.  Shifts include:

    • Friday/Saturday 2:30-10:30pm and Sunday/Monday 10:15pm-7:15am.
    • Sunday/Monday/Tuesday 2:30-10:30pm and Friday and Saturday Lead position 2:30-10:30pm
    • Wednesday/Thursday 2:30-10:30pm and Friday/Saturday/Sunday 11:30am-7:30pm
    •  Sunday/Monday Lead position 6:45am-2:45pm and Thursday/Friday/Saturday 6:45am to 2:45pm
    • Wednesday-Saturday Lead position 10:15pm- 7:15am
    • Saturday 10:15pm- 7:15am and Sunday-Tuesday Lead 10:15pm -7:15am

    Hourly range is $15.60-$16.54/hour. Benefits and generous pro-rated paid time off included at 20 hours per week or more.



    Monitor center throughout shift (including restrooms, hallway and the front of building) responding to any crisis situations. De-escalate problematic behavior and implement consequences for violating the day center’s guidelines.

    Refer Clients to appropriate social services agencies for assistance.

    Intake clients, record attendance and other statistical data in Clarity.

    Lead activities and classes.

    Clean facility according to cleaning schedule and as needed, including laundry.

    Receive visitors and in-kind donations.

    Receive and sort mail

    Monitor Shelter bus line.

    Assist in transportation of Shelter Residents from Shelter bus line to Shelter.

    Set up/break down night shelter

    Attend and participate staff meetings and trainings required by CCS/CHS for all employees.

    Help prepare and serve and meals.

    Read and oversee the daily log of day center activities.

    Make sure client mail is tracked, stored and distributed safely

    Assist in daily tasks such as, but not limited to, cleaning, emptying garbage and assisting in the laundry.

    Perform other tasks as assigned by the Lead Staff, Program Supervisor or Director.


    1. 6 months of direct service with homeless people or a similar population.
    2. Work history that demonstrates: Reliability and dependability; Ability to interact and communicate well with others; Ability to provide leadership to volunteers.
    3. Experience in crisis intervention.
    4. Understanding of the disease of alcoholism and other substance abuse issues, and mental health disorders.
    5. Support and uphold the mission, beliefs and values of Catholic Community Services and Catholic Housing Services.
    6. Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
    7. Demonstrate the necessary attitudes, knowledge and skills to deliver culturally competent services and work effectively in multicultural situations.
    8. Criminal history background checks are required prior to employment.
