  • Overview

    The Shelter Program Generalist is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the day center during hours of operation. The Shelter Program Generalist is responsible for unlocking and locking the doors, providing oversight and communicating policies and procedures in the absence of other FHN staff and assisting families as needed, notifying staff when necessary, and keeping a written log of events.  The Shelter Program Generalist is responsible for supervision of the family activities on as well as all risk-management at the Day Center. 


    The Day Center Maintenance/Custodial role includes all maintenance and upkeep of the Day Center that is not provided by the contracted custodian.


    Major duties and Responsibilities

    Coordinate ongoing operations of the Day Center:

    • Complete set-up of the room utilized prior to opening.
    • Sort and organize all donations.
    • Welcome individuals as they enter and collect data on the sign-in sheet.
    • Maintain calm and welcoming presence.
    • Keep a written log of events and participate in daily client update meetings with case management staff.

    Supervise those visiting the Day Center:

    • Engage with individuals as appropriate and as accepted by the individual.
    • Provide oversight and communication of all FHN policies and procedures to the families in the FHN Day Center.
    • Monitor and maintain safe shower, laundry, and kitchen facilities, including the management of shower and laundry sign ups and timing of showers.
    • Set appropriate boundaries for behavior and utilize de-escalation skills as needed.
    • Notify staff in the event of an emergency or other event requiring assistance.
    • Enter data into HMIS as required by contract and agency.
    • Assist individuals conducting internet searches for employment, education and housing.
    • Distribute hygiene items and other donations as available and appropriate.
    • Use knowledge of community services and resources to assist the families. 

    Building Maintenance:

    • Clean-up the room after each day of operation. Maintain cleanliness and order in all areas.
    • Perform all required maintenance and janitorial functions for FHN to include building equipment to include light painting, furniture moving, light plumbing, grounds maintenance, and light building repairs.
    • Supply ordering and inventory for Day Center.
    • Laundry of towels and other FHN items used by clients.
    • Serve on FHN Building Safety Committee.
    • Other duties as assigned.


    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Direct experience with homeless and/or at risk populations.
    • 1 year maintenance/janitorial experience.
    • High School diploma or GED.
    • Ability to read, writes, and speaks English well.
    • Reliable transportation.
    • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
    • Valid WA State Divers License and ability to qualify as a driver under the agency’s policies.
    • TB test or willingness to obtain.
    • Willingness and ability to make sound judgment without on-site supervision.
    • Ability to relate well to staff and clients from a diverse racial, ethnic and/or cultural background.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Crisis management experience
    • General office experience
    • Familiarity with community resources for low-income and homeless families with children.
    • Biligual
