    On-call, up to 20 hours/week.

     

    PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

    Michael’s Place provides transitional housing to 18 homeless male veterans.  The focus of the program is to assist veterans in finding a permanent place to call home.  The program is funded through a Grant Per Diem contract with the Veterans Administration. 

     

    POSITION DESCRIPTION:

    The Veterans’ Advocate ensures the smooth operations of the house, provides staff coverage, assists with unit turnovers, coordinates supplies, and coordinates volunteers.  The Veteran’s Advocate assesses and assists each client throughout his stay for life skills that may need improvement to help assure the client can maintain permanent housing upon exit from the program.

    Responsibilities

    Major Responsibilities

     

    Assist in completion of Veteran Advocate responsibilities to insure  on-going operations of Michael’s Place, including chores, yard care, scheduling and safety procedures:

    • Insure tracking data forms are completed by residents (Daily sign in, sign in-sign out forms)
    • Maintain an inventory of janitorial and maintenance supplies. Communicate need supplies to the case manager.
    • Conduct weekly inspections of property and arrange needed maintenance and repairs. Track completion of these responsibilities on the appropriate forms.
    • Conduct monthly bed bug inspections and document results.
    • Attend weekly staff meeting.

     Participation with volunteer efforts of individuals and groups:

    • Contact volunteers regarding schedules, when requested.
    • Oversee specific volunteer projects as needed.
    • Sort and organize donations 

    Supervise resident activities at the house:

    • Maintain resident files and daily log.
    • Provide case work assistance to residents in coordination with Case Manager.
    • Assist residents with completing or getting copies of documents, including but not limited to: credit reports, birth certificates, social security cards, and applications for school, employment and housing.
    • Monitor residents’ activities during on-duty hours.
    • Provide advocacy for residents as assigned.
    • Provide transportation and accompany residents as needed.
    • Conduct room checks as needed.
    • Enforce policies and procedures, adhering to program and CCS guidelines.
    • Maintain cleanliness and order in all areas.
    • Prepare vacant bedrooms for new tenants.
    • Assist with office support services.
    • Ensure completion of daily chores and weekly deep-clean chores. Provide instruction to residents when necessary.
    • Administer drug screenings on resident per program guidelines.
    • Issue and enforce consequences when necessary for noncompliant residents.
    • Work with clients who are struggling with sobriety issues on developing relapse prevention plans.
    • Insure residents who are on sobriety or mental health compliance plans are successfully completing those plans.
    • Plan, organize and oversee three cooking classes each year.
    • Attend weekly staff meeting. 
    • Other duties and/or special projects as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications

    • One year direct experience with homeless and/or at risk populations.
    • Valid WA State Divers License and ability to qualify as a driver under the agency’s policies.
    • Experience with the U. S. Armed Forces.
    • Willingness and ability to make sound judgment without on-site supervision.
    • Ability to relate well to staff and residents from a diverse racial, ethnic and/or cultural background.
    • Commitment to developing and safekeeping a workplace, which values and supports a culturally diverse work environment.
    • Commitment to CCS Mission Statement.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Bachelors Degree in Social Work or a closely related field
    • Bilingual
