Overview

$17.48 per hour. This is a part-time position.

 

There are two part-time shifts available.

 

  • Saturday and Sunday from 7am to 3pm
  • Saturday and Sunday from 4pm to 9pm (10 hours per week)

Program Description

The Bunny Wilburn Home is a women’s shelter program located in the Martin Luther King Jr Day Home Center in the Central District of Seattle. This low-barrier, harm reduction shelter offers 24-hour services to women experiencing homelessness. In addition to semi-private rooms, the 40 women who reside at BWH also have access to meal programs, volunteer opportunities and case management services. Our goal is to help women stabilize, envision the future and move out of homelessness permanently.

 

Position Description    

Women’s Advocates are responsible for creating a safe, welcoming environment, offering assistance and support to the women who reside at BWH, and fostering a team environment among shelter staff and volunteers.  As a low-barrier, harm reduction program, staff engage women where they are, using a strengths-based approach and trauma-informed care. All shelter staff are responsible for answering the women’s referral phone line and coordinating immediate shelter placement within our women’s shelter network in Seattle and King County.

Responsibilities

Direct service to homeless women

  • Build rapport and trust with the women who stay at BWH to best-address conflicts and crises.
  • Coordinate with service providers and medical professionals to address clients’ immediate needs.
  • Model healthy interpersonal communication and life skills.
  • Consistently apply program rules, policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a safe and comfortable shelter environment. 
  • Coordinate immediate shelter referrals for women who contact us via the women’s referral phone line.
  • Assist with unit turnover and vacancy readiness for women entering the shelter. 

Maintain a safe environment

  • Welcome clients, visitors and donors
  • Manage front desk and building security, monitoring security cameras and lobby.
  • Use best practices to clean, disinfect, and sanitize common areas.
  • Assist with bed bug mitigation and pest control, as needed.
  • Supervise volunteers on shift.

 Client intake, assessment and advocacy  

  • Perform intake of new clients, collecting data and Homeless Management Information System consent.
  • Assess and evaluate client needs.
  • Review program rules and expectations.
  • Provide new clients with bedding and other supplies to make them feel at home. 

Administrative and General Responsibilities

  • Use electronic log system to record activities throughout shift.
  • Attend staff meetings, workshops, retreats, and in-service classes as required.
  • Maintain accurate record of hours worked and submit timecards on schedule.
  • Contribute to and support a positive, team-oriented work environment.
  • Collaborate with other staff members in decision-making process. 
  • Maintain cleanliness and order at front desk and lobby area.
  • Inform supervisors of facilities and client-related issues.  
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Social service experience (minimum of six months).
  • Demonstrable understanding of women’s issues, homelessness, mental illness, and substance use disorders.
  • Demonstrable experience with crisis intervention.
  • Working knowledge of harm reduction and trauma-informed care.
  • Ability to work within the mission, goals, and objectives of Catholic Housing Services/Catholic Community Services.
  • Commitment to safekeeping a workplace that values and supports a culturally diverse work environment.
  • Must have a reliable phone or voice mail service at all times.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Ability to contribute to a work environment that fosters respect, teamwork, and excellence. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • College level classes toward degree in Social Service.
  • Previous work experience in a women-focused social service program.
