Catholic Housing Services believes everyone deserves the right to a safe, affordable place to call home.  Inspired by this vision, CHS develops, owns and manages affordable housing programs for low-income families and individuals; currently including 2,100 units of housing in 50 different buildings across Western Washington.   Bakhita Gardens is located in Seattle’s Belltown neighborhood and serves women exiting homelessness. Noel House provides interim housing for 40 women, and Rose of Lima is a congregate residence of 50 single-room-occupancy dwelling units.  Bakhita Gardens also houses administrative office space, and a ground floor retail space. The building exterior adheres to the neighborhood typology of single-lot prewar brick apartment buildings, while its interior respects program participants’ dignity and need for therapeutic surroundings to move forward from the trauma they have experienced previously.

Next to Bakhita Gardens, a sister property stands called Dorothy Day House. Dorothy Day House is a residence for homeless women. The Seattle residence provides 41 single units for low-income adult women, many of whom are disabled. Each unit is furnished with a bed, table, microwave, sink, and toilet. Community baths and kitchens are located on each floor. Rents are based on income.On site staffing supports each resident in achieving and maintaining a level of functioning that will enable each woman to live independently.


The individual in this position will be responsible for: janitorial functions including cleaning common areas both inside and outside the building. This position has primary responsibility for janitorial at Bakhita Gardens but will also rove to the property right next door called Dorothy Day House.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:


  1. Maintain cleanliness of interior and exterior of buildings in an environment where additional cleaning tasks regularly occur at any time: sweeping, mopping, cleaning bathrooms and common areas, vacuuming hallways, cleaning patio, entryway and glass, etc.; stocking supplies, washing walls, removing trash and recycling, etc.
  2. Maintain calm demeanor while performing duties in an environment where regular mental health escalations may occur.
  3. Regularly lift and carry supplies, donations, furnishing, etc.
  4. Assist building maintenance team with vendor scheduling, cleaning, repairs, special projects, etc. as needed.
  5. Auger drains when feasible.
  6. Change light bulbs and fluorescent tubes and dispose of properly
  7. Report any damage or needed repairs to maintenance staff
  8. Perform walkthrough of building(s) , as determined by necessary by supervisor and/or need
  9. Perform other janitorial duties as assigned
  10. Be in regular communication with staff, check/respond to email and calls/texts, etc.
  11. Notify manager of an incident or emergency situation by phone. If manager is not available, contact the next management personnel identified
  12. Work with the manager to assure appropriate emergency response and resident/building safety
  13. Call 911 in case of fire, gas fumes, life threatening concerns, and safety issues of the residents, building or grounds, or other related emergencies
  14. Alert management to areas of concern, either observed or mentioned by other residents

General Responsibilities:

  1. Observe/follow guidelines on confidentiality rights of residents and respect their privacy
  2. Alert management staff to issues/concerns regarding building or residents that are observed in course of performing duties
  3. Become familiar with landlord/tenant law and actions that are permissible for landlords
  4. Follow all safety guidelines, always use personal protective equipment, etc.
  5. Keep janitorial storage spaces and paperwork organized; maintain inventory of basic supplies, notify supervisor 
  6. Attend trainings required of employees and staff meetings as scheduled
  7. Maintain accurate record of hours worked and turn in timesheets on schedule
  8. Contribute to the mission of Catholic Community Services and Catholic Housing Services
  9. Assist with other staff members’ duties when they are out; cross-train with other positions
  10. Maintain an accurate, organized filing system
  11. Support Division Director, Program Director, Maintenance and Office Staff in special projects and tasks as needed
  12. Participate in a constructive manner during staff meetings and all other forms of correspondence;
  13. Contribute to and support a positive, team-oriented work environment and attitude


Minimum Qualifications: (Qualifications which applicants must possess to be considered for the position.)

  1. Minimum 6 months of janitorial experience.
  2. Ability to listen and communicate effectively to a diverse group of people in the spirit of compassion
  3. Attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks, track and follow up on tasks
  4. Attention to detail and ability to safely use cleaning equipment and supplies
  5. Ability to work independently
  6. Commitment to developing and safekeeping a workplace that values and supports a culturally diverse work environment
  7. Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds
  8. Ability to work within the mission, goals and objectives of Catholic Community Services and Catholic Housing Services
  9. Must be a team player and have a positive attitude
  10. Able to demonstrate commitment to the mission, goals and values of CCS/CHS
  11. Able to meet CHS criminal history background check requirements.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  (Qualifications which are desired in applicants;  however, applications without these qualifications will not necessarily be excluded from consideration if they possess minimum qualifications.)

  1. Experience working with a diverse population in a residential environment
  2. Experience in customer service
  3. Maintenance and repair experience
