40 hours/week, Saturday through Wednesday.

Program Description

The Josephinum is an historic high-rise building in downtown Seattle providing 222 studio and one-bedroom apartments for a diverse population of low-income individuals and several commercial spaces. Some units are set-asides for formerly homeless individuals being served through a number of programs that provide case management support to residents in those units.  A Catholic parish, Christ Our Hope, is the primary commercial tenant of the building and shares common space with residential tenants.  A homeless women’s hygiene program and a non-profit self-managed shelter provider also are located in the building.  The building is the largest single property in the portfolio of Catholic Housing Services of Western Washington, and is closely aligned with the mission of the Catholic Church.

 

Position Description

Responsible for cleaning building common areas and units during turnover. Seek to provide tenants with a safe, positive and sanitary living environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine scheduled cleaning duties: sweep, mop, and wash walls. Clean bathrooms, food serving area and other common areas to building standards.
  • Stock supplies.
  • Prepare vacant units for occupancy.
  • Maintain clean exterior of building.
  • Assist building maintenance staff and maintenance vendors as needed.
  • Remove garbage and recycling from floors and secure in dumpsters. Wash trash cans.
  • Regularly lift and carry supplies, donations, furnishing, etc.
  • Perform other janitorial duties as assigned.
  • Provide crisis intervention, and refer participants in crisis to appropriate staff on site.
  • Assist Advocacy staff members in floor checks as needed.
  • Model interpersonal and living skills for clients.
  • Enforce building and program rules including bar policy.

General Responsibilities

  • Observe/follow guidelines on confidentiality rights of residents and respect their privacy.
  • Alert management staff to issues/concerns regarding building or residents that are observed in the course of performing duties.
  • Maintain cooperative relationship with businesses in the surrounding neighborhood.
  • Contribute to the mission of Catholic Community Services
  • Contribute to and support a positive, team-oriented work environment.

Job Conditions

This position requires the employee to work in an environment where there may be exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and other potentially infectious material.  Other exposures could include cleaning supplies, bedbugs, chemicals involved in pest control, paint and other materials used in building maintenance, building temperature fluctuations, dust, noise, and odors.  Working conditions include interruptions, crisis response, and regular interactions with individuals who are dealing with issues of chemical dependency and/or mental illness, or are experiencing anger or frustration.

 

Physical and Mental Acuity Requirements

  • Able to hear telephone rings, phone conversation and face-to-face conversation, door bells and emergency alarms.
  • Able to speak clearly in person and on the telephone.
  • Able to hand write legibly.
  • Vision that enables person to read normal size print and handwritten notes; and distance and peripheral vision than enables person to monitor living spaces and identify concerns that require staff response.
  • Able to sit for sustained periods of time.
  • Able to walk the entire building and ascend and descend stairs quickly to move from one floor to another in order to respond to emergency situations.
  • Mobility/dexterity of hands/arms to enable keying into a unit or other locked area as well as using computers and other office equipment.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, and to work independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 20 pounds and occasionally up to 40 pounds.
  • Regularly able to perform duties as assigned.
  • Able to make independent decisions and apply sound judgment in performing job duties.
