The Youth Tutoring Program (YTP) is an after-school educational enrichment program for first through twelfth-grade scholars who live in seven low- and mixed-income housing communities in Seattle. Started as a partnership with the Seattle Housing Authority in 1991, the tutoring centers provide youth with a safe, positive, and stimulating environment to explore learning and experience academic and personal success. How YOU can make a difference

The Youth Tutoring Program is seeking a Temporary Summer Behavior Support Specialist to support activities in an elementary school summer learning program schedule. The Behavior Support Specialist (BSS) will have a pivotal role in executing the Yesler Terrace Summer program. The BSS will primarily focus on implementing Social Emotional Learning sessions with individual scholars or small groups, and will be responsible for intervening, redirecting, and providing support to scholars facing behavioral challenges.

Behavior management activities will encompass employing positive behavior interventions, facilitating conflict resolution, and being readily available to assist scholars as needed. Additionally, the BSS will handle administrative tasks such as communicating with families regarding absences and behavioral concerns, and monitoring and tracking attendance behavior.

This role will also involve assisting the Center Supervisor in overseeing scholars during educational and enrichment activities, undertaking duties including the distribution of learning materials and supplies, and providing support to families with scheduling and other program-related queries.

This position is temporary and will start on June 22nd and conclude on August 14th.

 

Work location & Schedule

  • On-site, (1) Seattle, WA
  • 20-30 hours per week, Monday through Friday

Responsibilities

  • Provide behavioral support and SEL guidance for scholars in group or individual settings.
  • Manage attendance recording, support staff and volunteer training, and ensure a positive, safe, and nurturing environment.
  • Develop and facilitate morning and end of day SEL activities.
  • Learn and develop summer activities as directed by the Center Supervisor, which include leading STEAM lessons, group, or field trips.
  • Assist with snack distribution, supplies, and other duties as needed.

Qualifications

Job Requirements

  • Experience working with scholars with a range of challenging behaviors and social-emotional support needs.
  • Experience working with scholars in an educational setting.
  • Cultural competence in working with diverse scholars.
  • Strong classroom management skills.
  • Strong technology skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to development and supporting values of a culturally diverse work environment.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification required before employment.
  • Support and contribute to a creative, collaborative, and respectful environment that promotes Teamwork.
  • Support and uphold the mission, beliefs, and values of Catholic Community Services and Catholic Housing Services.
  • Criminal history background checks are required before employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year or more of experience as an instructional assistant or similar position in an elementary school classroom, afterschool program, or summer program
  • Skills and training in Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports and Restorative Justice practices.
  • Experience with remote learning
